The Ethnological Archives was created in 1938. It is the central archives of Hungarian ethnography and gives insight into both the shaping of an intellectual, alternative tradition to the official ideology of the party-state, and into the practices of preserving the pre-communist cultural heritage. The history of the Archives aptly illustrates the difficulty in sharply distinguishing the roles of cultural opposition and cooperation in the socialist period as it also contains ethnographical collections created by research projects serving contemporary political and ideological goals.

Eustachy Kossakowski Archive

This immense archive of over 170.000 photographs is a unique account of economic, political, sport, cultural and everyday life in socialist Poland of the 1950s and the 1960s. They are the life’s work of photographer Eustachy Kossakowski. The collection contains press reportages created in cooperation with socio-cultural magazines, documentation of artistic life including exhibitions, happenings, installations, theatre spectacles and environment art, as well as the social life of artists. The archive also includes conceptual photography projects, which brought Kossakowski recognition in France in 1970s.

Everyday Life in Southwest Bulgaria during Socialism

This fascinating collection sheds insight on generally unknown moments of everyday life in southwest Bulgaria during state socialism, including: the experience of and resistance against collectivization; experiences reflecting the religious policy of the communist regime (e.g. towards Muslims) and others elements of everyday life. The collection is one of the first created by the Balkan Society for Autobiography and Social Communication - Blagoevgrad (BSASC). It mainly consists of oral histories and photographic documentation, which aim to share ordinary people's experience of socialism.

Everyday life East. A digital guide to everyday life in the GDR

This digital guide to everyday life in the GDR is a project initiated in 2017 by Kooperative Berlin, a Berlin-based media association, in collaboration with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship. The aim of the project is to create a digital guide to everyday life in the GDR by focusing on various places throughout the GDR. The project sheds light on a myriad of locations associated with activities tolerated or banned by the regime, which eventually impacted everyday life. The interactive platform was created with the purpose of providing tourists a tool to guide them to lesser-known places, which nevertheless provide broad insights into the stories and histories which made up everyday life in the GDR.

Exchange Gallery

The Exchange Gallery was established by the artist, movie-maker and animator Józef Robakowski, in 1978 in his private flat in Łódź. Throughout the next decade, the Exchange Gallery became one of the most important sites of so-called independent art movement, as well as one of the nodes of global neo-avant-garde net.
